The Magic of the Kamberg Night Sky
Far from the bright lights of the city, the Kamberg Valley offers an opportunity to experience the beauty of the Southern Hemisphere's night sky. Our May and August workshops have been carefully scheduled around the lunar cycle to maximise opportunities for photographing the Milky Way and creating spectacular star trails.
Important: Night-sky photography is subject to weather and visibility conditions.
The Rising Milky Way
6–9 May 2027

Illustrative graphic — not an actual photograph of Kamberg.
In May, the Milky Way's magnificent galactic core becomes increasingly prominent as the night progresses, climbing higher above the Drakensberg landscape and offering spectacular photographic opportunities into the early morning hours.
With the workshop coinciding with the new moon, conditions are particularly favourable for dark-sky photography.
The Evening Milky Way
26–29 August 2027

Illustrative graphic — not an actual photograph of Kamberg.
By late August, the Milky Way's galactic core is already prominent in the evening sky, offering excellent opportunities to capture dramatic night landscapes without waiting until the early morning hours.
The waning Moon rises later at night, providing extended periods of darkness during our planned evening photography sessions.
What our Photographers Say
Photography is about more than camera settings and technical knowledge. It's about developing confidence, discovering new perspectives and enjoying the experience of learning alongside others who share your passion. Here's what photographers who have joined our courses and workshops have to say about their experiences.
“I have attended several of Rory Baker's astrophotography workshops, including photographing the stars, the Moon and a lunar eclipse. Each workshop has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Rory has a wonderful ability to explain technical concepts in a clear, practical and easy-to-understand way. His patience, enthusiasm and willingness to share his knowledge have helped me develop both my skills and confidence in night-sky photography. What I particularly appreciate is the individual attention and hands-on guidance during the practical sessions. I would highly recommend Rory's workshops to anyone wanting to explore the fascinating world of astrophotography.” LC

CONFIDENCE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING
Rory Baker
Professional Photographer • Photography Educator • Workshop Host
I'm a professional photographer and photography educator with more than a decade of experience teaching photographers of all levels and hosting wildlife photography workshops.
I founded Rory Baker Photography School with a simple approach to teaching photography: make the technical understandable, keep the learning practical and help photographers understand why, rather than simply telling them which settings to use.
Throughout the Kamberg workshop, I'll work alongside you during our landscape and night-sky photography sessions, providing practical guidance with camera settings, exposure, focusing, composition and the techniques required to capture memorable photographs. My aim is to help you develop the confidence and understanding to make informed photographic decisions, both during the workshop and long after you return home.
